Mouthwash companies in their ads claim that their produce mouthwashes can cure the halitosis (bad breath). Oral origin is the most common cause of halitosis, but bad breath is not always the cause of mouth and sometimes is out of the mouth. For example, sinusitis, tonsillitis, digestive problems and respiratory problems or diseases such as diabetes, metabolic disorders, liver or kidney problems, and cancer etc. also can be the cause of bad breath. Cigarettes and other tobacco also causes to bad breath. The fact is that contrary to popular belief, most mouthwashes not only not help to cure the bad breath, but even is cause of bad breath! More mouthwashes are containing high alcohol. Alcohol dries the mouth mucosa. When saliva get dry and saliva secretion is reduced, oral bacterial flora is disrupted and those bacteria that may produce the bad breath can prevail. Saliva is a very important factor in reducing and eliminating the bad breath, mouthwashes without alcohol even can cause the bad breath with the change of microflora of the mouth. Mouthwashes not replace flossing. Brushing and flossing are basic principles of oral hygiene and have no replacement. The benefits of this herb are usually due to the presence of sulfur compounds.
